Low accessibility

Barriers

  • High volume of visitors: no special lower volume hours offered for people with disability.
  • Many of their important events such as artist talks or exhibition openings are very crowded and they do not provide enough seating. Apart from an increase in PTSD symptoms from the amount of people it is also physically unsafe for me and I can be pushed or bumped into and fall down. These would be important events to network, make connections and engage with a community in my local art scene.
  • Difficult to reach location: while in a beautiful seaside location it is a long walk from the nearest train station, a bus runs between the train station and the museum’s entrance however it is quite infrequent and because of this could be outside of my access needs as I only have a short amount of time outside of my home before I need to lay down.
  • Lack of online resources: Although they offer some online resources, there are not adequate distance resources that would allow me to get the same use out of this institution as if I was able bodied. Providing an alternative to in person events and access to their collection would allow me to get a real benefit from this institution when I am in too much pain or do not have the ability to leave my home.

Measures

  • Clear and extensive communication of access measures
  • Able to be quickly contacted by phone if I have any specific accessibility questions
  • Fully accessible building: if I plan to go during a weekday when I know they will have lower attendance I can fully access all of the museum’s exhibitions and facilities.
  • Offers wheelchairs and other mobility aids free of charge
  • Wheelchairs and mobility aids can be booked in advance
  • Honors handicap assistance programme: I can bring a helper on my visit free of charge.
