High accessibility

Barriers

  • High volume of visitors: no special lower volume hours offered for people with disability. Many of their important events such as SMK Fredags or exhibition openings are very crowded and they do not provide enough seating. Apart from an increase in PTSD symptoms from the amount of people it is also physically unsafe for me and I can be pushed or bumped into and fall down. These would be important events to network, make connections and engage with a community in my local art scene.
  • Not all works are shown at wheelchair height
  • Unable to book wheelchair or mobility aids in advance: I risk showing up and having to wait an uncertain amount of time for a wheelchair to become available.
  • Lack of online alternatives to conferences and events: Providing an alternative to in person events would allow me to get a real benefit from this public institution when I am in too much pain or do not have the ability to leave my home.

Measures

  • Clear and extensive communication of access measures
  • Fully accessible building: if I plan to go during a weekday when I know they will have lower attendance I can fully access all of the museum’s exhibitions and facilities.
  • Offers wheelchairs and other mobility aids free of charge
  • Honors handicap assistance programme: I can bring a helper on my visit free of charge.
  • Able to be quickly contacted by phone if I have any specific accessibility questions
  • Extensive online access to the collection: through SMK Open I can search the entire collection and find specific works from my home.
