Barriers

  • Does not offer funding that fits disability social benefits: In order to apply for or receive funding from the Danish Arts Council you must be legally able to work freelance. Since this is the largest funding body for visual artists, those of us reliant on disability social benefits that require us to work strictly on an hourly basis under contracted employment are blocked from this vital resource. Apart from the practical benefits of having the funds to realize artistic projects, receiving a working grant is one of the most legitimizing seals of approval that an artist can receive in the Danish art field, and we are blocked from receiving this vital seal of approval and furthering our practice.
  • No requirements for accessibility of funded projects: The Danish Arts Council allocates public funding to individual working artists, groups, or for specific projects with the end goal of furthering the enrichment of the Danish art scene. When applying for funds applicants are not required to state whether or not their project or any public event will be accessible to the entirety of the public, and once receiving the fund there are no requirements that this public money be used in a way that benefits the entirety of the public, including us with disabilities. I would love to see them take a stance in saying if you receive public funding we have strict requirements that the project be accessible and that they would, along with the Ministry of Culture, create accessibility guidelines that be followed when public money is involved.
